About Cambodia
The Royal Kingdom of Cambodia borders Thailand, Laos and Vietnam and is one of the poorest countries in South East Asia. It is also one of the smallest with only 14 million inhabitants. Most of the people are Buddhist and rely on agriculture for their livelihood. Other important industries include tourism and the garment.
The kingdom is a constitutional monarchy. King Norodom Sihamoni has reigned since 2004.
Cambodia's breathtaking ancient temple complex Angkor Wat is the pride of the Cambodians. This part of the history showcases the rich architecture of the Angkor period.
The French colonial influence is still noticeable in Cambodian daily life with examples of beautiful buildings, delicatessens and French language is still spoken by senior Cambodians.
Recent history in Cambodia is overshadowed by the rule of the Khmer Rouge. It was only after the death of Pol Pot, who led the evil Khmer Rouge, that Cambodians were able to start rebuilding their lives and their country.
The local currency is the Cambodian Riel although American Dollars are widely accepted and even Thai baht in areas near the Thai border. Through out the country there are numerous ATM machines. Withdrawal is always in American Dollars.
As Cambodia has rebuilt itself, medical services and hygiene standards have improved. Internet and telephone facilities are also available in most parts of the Kingdom. Over the last ten years Cambodia has developed tremendously by investing in infrastructure and modern facilities.
Cambodia offers more than just Angkor Wat, for example, a huge variety of wild life, mountains with remote hill tribes, rural flatland villages, tropical palm tree beaches, crystal blue seawater, the amazing Irrawadee dolphins in the Mekong River, or the rarely visited islands in the vicinity of Sihanoukville.
