The Monks Community Forest: A Model for Conservation
The Monks Community Forest (MCF) in Oddar Meanchey province is a remarkable example of how religious and community efforts can effectively protect the environment. Led by the monks of Samraong Pagoda, this 18,261-hectare forest is a sanctuary for biodiversity and a testament to the power of collective action. Bun Saluth is the inspiring figure behind the Monks Community Forest (MCF). As the chief monk at Samraong Pagoda, he spearheaded the initiative to protect the 18,261-hectare forest from deforestation and illegal logging. Saluth's dedication to environmental conservation is deeply rooted in his Buddhist beliefs. He has faced numerous challenges, including threats to his life, but his unwavering commitment has led to the creation of the largest community-managed forest conservation site in Cambodia.
His work extends beyond forest protection. Saluth has been instrumental in raising awareness and inspiring other monks to become involved in environmental conservation. He is often referred to as the pioneer of the Buddhist environmental movement in Cambodia. While Monk Saluth is no longer actively serving as a monk, he remains deeply committed to this project. On July 27, 2024, our team at Cambodian Travel Partner joined forces to plant thousands of new trees, further expanding the forest.
