Sustainability

Why you won’t find a western sustainability logo on our website

When searching for a sustainable travel company, you are likely used to looking for eco-labels and certifications from large, Western organizations. However, you will not find those logos on our website. This is a very deliberate, principled choice. We believe that true sustainability does not live on paper or inside a corporate checklist. It lives on the ground.

The Reality Behind the “Checklist Culture”

In recent years, the travel industry has become obsessed with a massive paper trail. Large Western certification bodies issue thick manuals filled with theoretical criteria. Today, some travel agencies even hire external consultants simply to fill out these forms and secure the badge.

Meanwhile, representatives from these organizations rarely, if ever, set foot on the actual operating floor. They audit procedures, not practice. A company can score perfectly on paper while the local community sees absolutely no benefit in reality. We refuse to participate in this form of greenwashing.

Cambodian Travel Partner: Twenty Years of Common-Sense Impact

For us, sustainability is not a marketing tool or an annual box to tick; it has been in our DNA for over twenty years. From day one, we have operated using common sense, deep roots in the country, and a clear moral compass. Instead of spending our time, energy, and resources on expensive Western audits and redundant paperwork, we channel them directly into the ground.

We don’t need a certificate to tell us to do the right thing. Rather than spending our energy on endless paperwork, we choose to invest directly in local communities, turning administrative costs into meaningful support where it is needed most Here is what real, long-term commitment looks like in our daily operations:

1. Our Eco-Friendly Office

Eco friendly office Cambodian Travel Partner

The foundation of a responsible organization starts from within, which is why we invested in creating our own sustainable office space. Nestled among the green rice fields, our office was designed in collaboration with a renowned architect to maximize harmony with nature.

By prioritizing bioclimatic design, the building features optimal natural air circulation. Even when temperatures hit 35 degree celsius, the airflow keeps the space remarkably comfortable without the immediate need for air conditioning. This is further enhanced by the lush trees and plants surrounding the building, which act as a natural shield, blocking direct sunlight from heating up the walls.

Our Sustainable Infrastructure & Workflow:

  • Solar Powered: The roof of our parking area features a 36-panel solar energy system connected to high-capacity battery storage, allowing our operations to run on self-generated  energy most of the time.  We chose solar power and batteries, but not because it is ‘green energy’—because true green energy doesn’t exist. Despite it being a major investment, we opted for solar because it is much quieter than a generator and gasoline prices are relatively high.

  • Water Self-Sufficiency & Filtration: We utilize our own groundwater well. A solar-powered pump delivers water to storage tanks on the roof, where a specialized filtration system ensures clean water throughout the building. In the kitchen, an additional advanced water purification system provides perfectly safe, drinkable tap water, completely eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles.

  • Energy Efficiency: The entire office is equipped with energy-saving LED lighting.

  • Eco-Friendly Operations: We minimize our ecological footprint by using environmentally friendly cleaning products and maintaining a strict digital-first policy to keep paper consumption to an absolute minimum.

  • Healthy fruit and vegatables: We have a very large organic garden where we grow a wide variety of fresh produce, including: pineapple, (chili) peppers, coconuts, papaya, mango, aloe vera, lemon, dragon fruit, lettuce, spring onion, bananas, rose apple, and much more.

A Safe and Inspiring Workplace:

We believe that sustainability also includes the well-being of our team. Our staff enjoys a dedicated, fully equipped kitchen to prepare meals. Every team member works at a spacious desk outfitted with dual monitors to facilitate a smooth, efficient, and ergonomic workflow. For safety and peace of mind, a fully stocked first-aid kit is always on-site.

2. Social Development & Community Projects

Donation school supply Preah Vihear

While organizations like UNICEF strongly advise against visiting schools and residential care centers, our 20+ years of on-the-ground experience in Cambodia has shown us that responsible, strictly regulated engagement can change lives. We believe that complete isolation is not always the answer; instead, stringent ethical guidelines must be followed to ensure the children’s well-being remains the absolute priority.

For over two decades, we have been actively involved with and supporting several small schools and community projects across Cambodia. Many of these children lacked a safety net. By introducing our guests to these initiatives in a respectful manner, we have been able to secure vital funding that has kept children off the streets and in safe learning environments. A proud example dates back to 2004, when we began supporting a children’s home in Phnom Penh; thanks to the generous, ongoing donations from our guests, the majority of those children successfully completed their education and built independent lives.

Our Strict Ethical Guidelines:

  • Zero Classroom Disruption: We have a strict ‘no-go’ policy when it comes to interrupting formal education. Tour groups are never allowed to disrupt active classes or lessons.

  • After-School & Extra-Curricular Engagement: Visits are carefully timed and structured around after-school hours or designated recreational activities. This allows for positive, encouraging social interaction that fosters the children’s development without interfering with their education.

  • Long-Term Commitment: We do not engage in superficial ‘poverty tourism.’ Our relationships with these projects span decades, ensuring stable, long-term financial and operational support.

By bridging the gap between conscious travelers and local community projects, we ensure that tourism acts as a direct catalyst for social development, education, and a brighter future for Cambodia’s youth.

3. Animal Welfare: Our Personal Commitment

At Cambodian Travel Partner, animal welfare is close to our hearts. Our dedication to protecting animals starts right at our own office and home, which is currently shared with four rescued dogs, each with their own unique story:

  • Reggi: Rescued over six years ago from Kampot, where he had suffered from severe mistreatment. After Lily’s brother, Kimlay, took him in and brought him to safety, Reggi found his forever home with us and has been a happy, thriving member of the family ever since.
  • Leap & Bibi: Four years ago, while visiting a village in Phnom Kulen, André and Lily discovered a litter of newborn puppies whose mother had tragically passed away just a day after giving birth. Knowing they had to act, they brought Leap and Bibi home and hand-raised them into the healthy, playful dogs they are today.
  •   Nimo: The youngest addition, Nimo arrived at our gate as a stray puppy and simply refused to leave. After checking with the entire neighborhood to ensure no one was searching for him, we officially welcomed him into our family.

Ethical Wildlife Tourism on the Ground: Beyond our personal rescues, we apply the highest ethical standards to any tour or project involving animals. We firmly believe that the well-being of the animal must always come first. When managed responsibly, conscious tourism acts as a vital financial lifeline for conservation projects that would otherwise struggle to survive:

  • The Irrawaddy Dolphins (Kampi): By supporting regulated, non-intrusive boat tours to see these rare freshwater dolphins, tourism has provided the local community with an alternative income to fishing, leading to successful protection and a measurable growth in the dolphin population.

  • Kulen Elephant Forest: We proudly support this sanctuary in a community-protected forest, which provides a retirement home for 11 elephants who previously spent decades giving rides at Angkor Wat. Without the financial contributions of responsible travelers, it would be impossible to cover the massive daily costs of feeding these gentle giants and providing fair wages for their mahouts (caretakers).

These are just a few examples; we also take our guests to many other animal welfare organizations across Cambodia.By choosing ethical animal encounters, we ensure your journey actively contributes to the preservation, dignity, and protection of Cambodia’s wildlife.

4. Environmental & Nature Conservation

Tree planting in Siem Reap

In addition to supporting local communities and animal welfare, preserving Cambodia’s natural heritage is at the very core of what we do. Over the past 25 years, Cambodia has suffered devastating environmental losses, with areas like Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri losing over 60% of their dense forest cover to the illegal logging of precious hardwoods like Teak, Mahogany, and Rosewood.

We believe that every effort counts in reversing this damage. Rather than standing by, we actively invest in reforestation, habitat protection, and waste management projects across the Kingdom:

  • Reforestation & Tree Planting: We fund and participate in tree-planting initiatives in Siem Reap, the Run Ta Ek eco-village, and a specialized conservation project managed by Buddhist monks in a community forest in northern Cambodia.

  • Bringing the Mangroves Back to Life (Kampot): Since 2013, we have been continuously planting new mangrove trees in the Trapeang Sangkae community area in Kampot. Today, hundreds of thousands of new mangroves have been successfully restored. This vital coastal ecosystem has fully come back to life, with native fish, crabs, and bird species returning to the area.

  • Protecting Wildlife Habitats (BeTreed Adventures): We operate specialized jeep tours to BeTreed, a magnificent eco-conservation project in Preah Vihear province. Founded by Ben and Sharyn, this initiative does incredible, brave work on the frontline to protect a massive tract of wild forest from illegal logging and wildlife poaching.

  • Clean-Up Initiatives: We regularly organize and join local clean-up campaigns to remove plastic waste and refuse from natural habitats, promoting a cleaner, healthier environment.

These are just a few examples of the initiatives we support. We are actively involved in many more community and conservation projects across Cambodia. By traveling with us, you directly support these vital conservation efforts, helping to protect Cambodia’s breathtaking landscapes and biodiversity for generations to come.

5. Training, Education & Capacity Building

Lily TUI Futureshaper

The tourism landscape has evolved tremendously over the last two decades. To stay ahead of the curve and maintain the highest industry standards, we continuously participate in advanced courses and industry presentations. More importantly, we pass this knowledge directly down to our team through regular training programs for our office staff, guides, and drivers.

Every year, our guides and drivers undergo refresher courses focused on enhancing customer service and delivering exceptional guest experiences. Additionally, our frontline team receives professional First Aid training certified by the Red Cross, ensuring maximum safety on all our tours.

Empowering Women & Resilient Tourism: We believe in strong leadership and community empowerment, which is reflected in our active participation in major developmental programs:

  • GIZ ICONE Mentorship: Lily successfully completed a comprehensive 2-year program organized by GIZ ICONE. This initiative trained her to mentor other local entrepreneurs in digital marketing, social media strategies, human resources, and all essential facets of modern business management.

  • TUI Futureshapers Cambodia: Lily, alongside 15 selected travel companies from Siem Reap, participated in the TUI Futureshapers Cambodia project. This outstanding initiative—spearheaded by the TUI Care Foundation in collaboration with the German Development Agency (GIZ) is specifically designed to make Cambodia’s tourism sector more competitive, sustainable, and resilient for the future.

By constantly leveling up our skills and supporting sustainable tourism frameworks, we ensure that our team is fully equipped to give you a safe, professional, and unforgettable Cambodian adventure.

6. Our Involvement in Tourism and Recognition

Through our years of experience as pioneers in the early stages of Cambodian tourism (we were among the very first to introduce homestays in Cambodia back in 2004), we are regularly invited to participate in FAM trips to community-based projects to offer our strategic advice. In those early days, the Cambodia Community-Based Tourism Network (CCBEN) was active. For years, this was the ultimate umbrella platform—established with the support of NGOs such as WWF and SNV—to connect local communities and eco-tourism initiatives. We participated in milestone projects like the Mekong Discovery Trail in Kratie and the Chi Phat community project. Even today, we continue to support and advise community-based initiatives, such as Karma Flame in Sambor Prei Kuk and the community project in Kratie.

We have been active members of CATA (Cambodia Association of Travel Agents) since 2004. The primary goal of CATA is to serve as “the single voice” for travel agents and tour operators in Cambodia. In 2025, Lily was nominated by CATA President Madame Chhay Sivlin to participate in the ASEAN Women Entrepreneurs Network (AWEN) Awards. Lily entered the competition, achieved the highest score, and was honored with the ASEAN Outstanding Women Entrepreneur Award 2025. She was the very first travel entrepreneur in Cambodia to receive this prestigious award.

We are also a member of CAMDMC. This is an unofficial organization comprising 18 leading Destination Management Companies (DMCs) in Cambodia, aimed at exchanging collective knowledge and supporting one another in promoting Cambodia.

Cambodian Travel Partner and Cambodiajeep are both co-founders (alongside seven other co-founders) of the Siem Reap Tourism Alliance. The Siem Reap Tourism Alliance (STA) is a powerful, private-sector-led non-profit initiative specifically established to put Siem Reap on the international map with a single, unified, and modern voice. This initiative emerged organically from close collaboration between local tour operators and tourism entrepreneurs, supported by the GIZ ICONE program of the German development agency.

Our years of dedication to tourism, destination promotion, supporting local entrepreneurs, and assisting community projects have not gone unnoticed by the Cambodian government. In 2026, both Lily and André received a Royal Decoration. They were presented with this honor by H.E. Hun Many during the official event celebrating the 30th anniversary of CATA.

7. The Lily Foundation: Direct Impact, Built on Trust

Sustainable Eco friendly Company

The Lily Foundation was born out of a simple desire: to support projects and individuals in Cambodia who need immediate help. Our approach is flexible—we provide both rapid, ad hoc emergency relief and long-term, structural support where it matters most.

While Cambodiajeep and Cambodian Travel Partner act as primary donors, our impact is amplified by the incredible generosity of our guests, friends, and family. Together, over the years, we have been able to change lives and uplift vulnerable communities.

Our Tangible Impact Across Cambodia:

  • Education & Schools: We regularly fund the salaries of teachers at small rural schools. On our group tours, we always carry essential school supplies to distribute to remote classrooms far from the major cities. Thanks to a few extraordinarily generous guests, we have even built a complete school from the ground up.

  • Mobility & Health: We have donated many bicycles to students so they can safely travel to school, provided life-saving medicine to the elderly, and installed clean-water wells in small villages just outside Siem Reap.

  • Community & Spiritual Support: Buddhism is the cornerstone of Cambodian life. Every month, we donate food and financial aid to various pagodas, and we completely funded one of the units for participants attending a Vipassana Meditation program

  • Local & Emergency Relief: We are proud active sponsors of the annual Siem Reap Giant Puppet Parade alongside our fellow CAMDMC members. Furthermore, when tensions at the Thai border escalated in 2025, we stepped in immediately, donating thousands of dollars worth of food and drinking water to refugee camps.

Here is a prime example of how the Lily Foundation collaborates with local families:

In 2011, we donated a fleet of city bicycles to a family living in the village of Bakong.  One of our signature jeep tours visits this village, featuring a local cycling excursion as part of the itinerary. Instead of sourcing bicycles elsewhere, we rent them directly from this family for our guests.

Because the family didn’t have to invest any startup capital, they began earning a steady income from the rentals right away—their only responsibility being the maintenance of the bikes. Thanks to the ongoing revenue from this bike rental initiative, the father has been able to fully fund his children’s education and send them to school.

100% Trust, 0% Overhead

The Lily Foundation is not a bureaucratic or official institution; it is entirely built on trust. We believe this is our greatest strength. Because we operate independently, we can guarantee that every single dollar received goes directly to the people and projects that need it.

André and Lily personally cover all administrative and operational overhead expenses. When you support the Lily Foundation, you can rest assured that 100% of your contribution makes a direct, unfiltered difference on the ground.

8. Dine With The Locals: Immersive Cultural Experiences

Dine with the locals

Food and shared moments have a unique way of bringing people together. Through our Dine with the Locals initiative and our community-based activities, we connect travelers directly with Cambodian families, creating meaningful cultural exchanges that go far beyond the typical tourist path.

What started as a home-cooked meal initiative is now evolving into a broader platform of local, host-led experiences. Instead of relying on large-scale tourist operators, our guests step into the daily lives of everyday Cambodians—sharing tables, exploring neighborhoods, and learning directly from the people who know the country best.

The Story Behind the Project

A few years before the pandemic, Thomas Wanhoff had a brilliant idea: how could we create a bridge for local Cambodians—particularly women—who normally have zero access to the tourism market, and help them generate an extra income? With this vision, he founded Dine with the Locals.

When Covid-19 hit, the travel industry came to a complete standstill, deeply impacting the project. Looking for a way to safeguard its future as travel began to return, Thomas asked André to take over the reigns. To help rebuild the platform in those vital first years post-pandemic, Dean and Ada stepped in to manage and revitalize the operations. Eventually, they successfully passed the torch to André and Lily, who are now driving the project forward into its next exciting chapter.

Our Expanding Range of Local Experiences:

  • Authentic Home Dining: Step into a local home to share a table, exchange stories, and enjoy traditional, generations-old recipes prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

  • Community Walking Tours: Explore hidden gems through the eyes of a resident, such as our unique heritage walking tour in the historic town of Chhlong.

  • Local Foodie Tours: Dive deep into Cambodia’s vibrant culinary scene with our specialized food tour in Phnom Penh, sampling street food and local delicacies where the residents actually eat.

  • More Coming This Year: We are actively expanding this program. Throughout this year, we will be adding even more immersive, community-driven activities to our itineraries, giving you even more ways to connect with locals.

Why This Matters for Sustainability:

  • Direct Economic Benefit: This initiative provides a vital income stream directly to local families, guides, and neighborhood vendors. Hosts and guides are paid fairly, ensuring tourism dollars stay within the community.

  • Empowering Communities: By training and partnering with local residents, we foster financial independence, build confidence, and help everyday Cambodians become proud ambassadors of their own culture.

  • Preserving Living Heritage: Whether it’s sharing a traditional recipe or walking through a historic village, these interactions keep local stories, architecture, and traditions alive.

By joining these activities, you aren’t just a spectator; you are actively contributing to a Cambodian family’s livelihood and helping protect the authentic spirit of the Kingdom.

Summary: True Impact vs. Green Bureaucracy

Helping rural schools in Cambodia

From day one, Cambodian Travel Partner has been deeply rooted in the communities we visit. Over the years, we have built a proven track record of supporting local projects, schools, and sustainable livelihoods. In reality, our hands-on devotion goes far beyond the tick-box checklists required by official sustainability certificates.

Yet, we choose not to participate in this certification system.

Today, European regulations heavily fine travel companies that do not comply with these bureaucratic standards—fines that can rack up to millions of euros for major European tour operators. The blatant hypocrisy, however, lies within the very institutions enforcing these rules.

Take the European Parliament: every single month, thousands of officials pack up and relocate between Brussels and Strasbourg. This “traveling circus” wastes millions in taxpayer money and leaves massive, fully heated governmental buildings sitting empty for weeks—a staggering environmental footprint.

Furthermore, the world is led by high-ranking officials who dictate climate policy, only to fly to global climate summits in private jets. Consider the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference in Brazil, where nearly 15 kilometers of highway were carved directly through a protected nature reserve just to accommodate the event.

We could list hundreds of similar examples. Our point is simple: as a dedicated, independent tour operator doing everything in our power to uplift local
Cambodian communities, we refuse to be measured by a flawed and bureaucratic system. We choose real, grassroots action over hypocritical stamps of approval.
