Forgotten temples of the pre-Angkorian age:
Today, we'll enjoy some sightseeing around Takeo with your site guide. The broader region of Angkor Borei and Phnom Da showcases remnants of ancient water management systems. Angkor Borei, situated approximately 3 kilometers northwest of Phnom Da, was a significant political center from around 500 B.C. to the late 6th century. The area features extensive canal networks and moats, indicating sophisticated hydraulic engineering practices by the early Khmer civilization. Our day begins with a boat tour down these infamous irrigation channels, arriving in Angkor Borei. Angkor Borei and the nearby Phnom Da are believed to have been the heart of the early Funan kingdom, one of the first Indianized states in Southeast Asia, flourishing from the 1st to the 6th centuries CE. For a period, this area served as the capital of Funan. You will visit Angkor Borei Museum and this small museum houses artifacts discovered in the region, providing further context to the history of Phnom Da. Its a short drive to Phnom Da. Phnom Da is a historically significant site, offering insights into the pre-Angkorian Funan and Chenla kingdoms and showcasing the early development of Khmer art and architecture.
Next, we'll visit Phnom Bayang Temple. Takeo’s Ancient Hilltop Temple Complex. Believed to have been constructed between AD 615 and 635 during the reign of King Isanavarman I, Phnom Bayang stands as one of Cambodia’s oldest temples, predating the Angkorian era. The site comprises several ancient brick structures perched atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The temple's design reflects early Khmer architectural styles. Phnom Bayang holds religious significance and is associated with local legends and spiritual practices, making it a site of pilgrimage and cultural interest.? To reach the base of the hilltop, we'll transport on the back of a motorbike winding through the mountain trail, enjoying the nature and surroundings as we drive through (Walking is also possible if you are not comfortable with the drive). Once you arrive at the base, take the stairs which follows a steep path up to the top of the temple complex, there's a rope to help you along. Once we reach the 273m mountain peek, enjoy the spectacular views from above. If you are not comfortable with the drive and steps, we can visit some of the other temples on the mountain.
