Unveil Cambodia's Hidden Gems: A Journey Beyond Angkor

Bid farewell to Siem Reap and set off on a journey beyond the well-travelled paths of Angkor. Our first stop is Beng Mealea, an atmospheric 12th-century temple where ancient stonework disappears beneath enormous tree roots, vines and thick jungle. Partially collapsed and beautifully overgrown, it offers a wonderful sense of discovery and a glimpse of how many of Cambodia's temples must once have appeared before restoration began.

From here, we continue deeper into the Cambodian countryside to Koh Ker, the short-lived capital of the Khmer Empire from 928 to 944 AD and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Scattered across the forest are numerous temples and archaeological remains, but the undisputed highlight is Prasat Thom, with its remarkable seven-tiered pyramid rising high above the surrounding landscape.

Rather than rushing onwards, we stay overnight not far from Koh Ker, allowing us to enjoy this remote corner of Cambodia at a more relaxed pace. Far from the bustle of Siem Reap, the evening offers a completely different atmosphere — quiet, rural and wonderfully peaceful.

Tomorrow, our journey continues to Sambor Prei Kuk, where another extraordinary chapter of Cambodia's ancient history awaits.

Day 7 · Ko Ker - Kampong Thom

The Forest Temples of Sambor Prei Kuk”

After breakfast, we leave our peaceful surroundings near Koh Ker and continue south towards Kampong Thom, travelling through rural Cambodia to one of the country's most fascinating ancient sites: Sambor Prei Kuk.

Long before Angkor became the heart of the Khmer Empire, Sambor Prei Kuk was already an important religious and political centre. Dating mainly from the 7th century, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to dozens of remarkably atmospheric brick temples scattered throughout the forest.

Explore the temple complexes on foot, or, for those who prefer a little more adventure, hop on a bicycle and cycle along the forest trails between the ancient ruins. Shaded by towering trees and surrounded by nature, it is a wonderfully relaxed way to discover the site. Along the way, look out for some of Sambor Prei Kuk's distinctive octagonal temples and beautifully preserved carvings.

After our visit, we continue to Kampong Thom, where we make a stop at the town's small local museum. Its modest collection of archaeological finds provides another glimpse into the long history of the region and the ancient civilizations that flourished here centuries before Angkor.

We then check into our hotel in Kampong Thom, with time to relax after a day filled with temples, forests and another fascinating chapter of Cambodia's history.

Day 8 · Kampong Thom - Siem Reap

Cambodia's rich history and artistic heritage

Today, we leave the ancient temples behind and discover another side of Kampong Thom — one shaped by local craftsmanship, traditional skills and everyday Cambodian life.

Our first stop is a village known for its sandstone carving, where skilled artisans transform blocks of stone into intricate sculptures using techniques passed down through generations. Watching the craftsmen at work offers a fascinating glimpse into the skills behind the beautiful carvings seen at Cambodia's ancient temples.

We then visit the silk farm project of Ms. Navin, a wonderful local initiative where we learn more about the traditional process of Cambodian silk production. From the silkworm to the finished fabric, it is a story of patience, craftsmanship and a tradition that continues to provide opportunities for local families.

Next, we make our way to Phnom Santuk, one of the region's most important sacred mountains. A long staircase leads to the summit, passing colourful shrines and Buddhist statues along the way. At the top, explore the pagoda, reclining Buddha and other religious sites while enjoying sweeping views across the surrounding Cambodian countryside.

Afterwards, we begin our journey back to Siem Reap. Along the way, we stop at Kampong Kdei, home to the impressive Spean Praptos, one of the largest surviving bridges from the Angkorian period. Built from massive laterite blocks more than eight centuries ago, it is another remarkable reminder of the engineering achievements of the Khmer Empire.

By late afternoon, we arrive back in Siem Reap, completing a journey that has taken us from world-famous temples to remote ruins, forest trails, traditional villages and the people who continue to keep Cambodia's heritage alive today.
