I first arrived in Phnom Penh in November 2003, and this city captured my heart instantly. Back then, though it was the capital, it felt like a tranquil village. There were no high-rises, virtually no traffic chaos, and the city lights dimmed by 8 PM. If I rode my motorcycle through the streets around 9 PM, everything was abandoned—hardly a soul in sight! This was, of course, just after the war, and many residents were still too afraid of danger to venture out at night. Power outages were a regular occurrence, adding to the quiet atmosphere.

The City That Never Sleeps

Fast forward 23 years, and the city has undergone a complete metamorphosis! Phnom Penh has exploded into a thrilling, vibrant metropolis that runs 24 hours a day. Like any major city now, it boasts soaring skyscrapers and bustling traffic. Almost every major intersection is dominated by massive video screens broadcasting dazzling advertisements. Buildings are spectacularly illuminated, and the city is dotted with luxurious shopping malls. These centers offer everything from cinemas, go-karts, and entertainment to top luxury brands. Balenciaga, Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, and Baccarat, alongside popular names such as Apple, Samsonite, KFC, Starbucks, Puma, and Rolex!

New Ways to Explore

While most tourists still visit the iconic sites—the Royal Palace, the S-21 Genocide Museum, the Killing Fields, and Wat Phnom—the city’s tourist offering has expanded dramatically! Recent additions include exciting foodie tours, immersive cooking classes, and bicycle tours. The lively night market, primarily offering clothing, is also a favorite. The government is actively fueling this growth, notably through the spectacular annual Water Festival, a three-day celebration of music, food, and thrilling boat races that draws huge crowds. Most recently, the government launched the new “Walking Street” initiative, adding another fantastic dimension to the city’s nightlife!

The Phnom Penh Walking Street (also known as Chaktomuk Walk Street) is one of the city’s newest and most exciting developments, transforming the riverside into a vibrant cultural and social hub. It extends from the Cambodian Post Office to the area directly in front of the Royal Palace. Every Saturday and Sunday evening. The street is closed to vehicles and open to pedestrians from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. It launched as a pilot project on February 1, 2025, and has since been highly popular among both locals and tourists, with over 80,000 to 100,000 visitors per weekend.

The Walking Street is designed to be a car-free promenade that amplifies the energy of the riverside, providing a safe, open space for community and culture.

Our experience in the Walking Street:

My amazing Cambodian family and I headed straight to the Chaktomuk Walking Street for some fun. We kicked things off right outside the Tribe Post Office Square Hotel and took a gorgeous stroll along the riverside, all the way to the Royal Palace.

The absolute highlight was seeing our little niece’s joy! She had a blast, especially when a street artist gave her a balloon! Then, to make the night even more magical, she started dancing right along with the lively local musicians! It was a truly stunning and vibrant evening we’ll never forget.

We enjoy a mix of traditional and contemporary acts, including classical Khmer music, ancient dances (like the Phuong Nay dance), comedy performances (Nay Krem), and even circus acts.

The street is lined with food stalls and vendors, offering a huge range of culinary delights.  You can find everything from iced Khmer coffee and fresh coconut water to popular street snacks like:

We dove right in, trying all sorts of amazing local snacks and drinks! We sat shoulder-to-shoulder with the locals on tiny plastic chairs, and honestly, there’s no better way to truly connect with the wonderful Cambodian people.The project is a key government initiative to boost tourism and urban livability, making it a very safe and organized experience with public restrooms and designated parking areas nearby.

On 9 September 2025, I joined the Mystery Temple Tour. I was very excited because this tour is known for both temples and adventure. It turned out to be a wonderful experience that I will always remember. Our first stop was at a quiet pagoda. The place was calm, with golden statues, paintings, and the sound of birds. Local people came to pray, and it was interesting to see their traditions. Visiting this pagoda gave me a peaceful feeling before starting the rest of the journey. After that, we visited six more temples hidden in the countryside. Each temple was different. Some were covered by big tree roots, almost lost to nature. Others were still standing strong, showing the beautiful work of ancient builders. Walking through these places felt like stepping back in time. I imagined what life was like hundreds of years ago, when these temples were full of people and activity.

Why I love the green season in Cambodia:

Getting to the temples was not easy. September is rainy season or we call it The Green Season in Cambodia, and the roads were muddy and full of water. Our vintage jeep had to cross puddles, streams, and slippery tracks. At one point, the mud was too deep, and the jeep got stuck. For a moment we all wondered what to do, but then everyone worked together. We found a tree branch, placed it under the wheel, and pushed. It was hard work, and we got wet and muddy, but soon the jeep moved forward again. We all laughed and cheered when it was free. That teamwork made the adventure even more fun. The countryside itself was beautiful. Along the way, I saw green rice fields, tall palm trees, and small villages. Children waved and smiled as our jeep passed. The mix of temples, nature, and village life made the journey feel special and very real. It was not just about history but also about seeing everyday life in Cambodia.

The most interesting part of this tour are the unknown temples. These temples are not famous like Angkor Wat. They are hidden and less visited. I cannot tell the names—they remain secret. This makes the tour feel like a true discovery, something only a few people get to see. If you want to explore these mystery temples, Cambodia Jeep can take you there. Sreykhouch’s Story: Why I Fell in Love with the Kulen Elephants

Hi, I’m Sreykhouch and I work as a Tour Coordinator for Cambodian Travel Partner. Whilst working for the company is always busy, sometimes we get opportunities to inspect some of the services that we offer to our guests. I was very pleased when my manager arranged for us to go to inspect Kulen Elephant Forest as I had never personally met an elephant!

Kulen Elephant Forest is located approximately 40 kilometers from Siem Reap town.

On the morning of the inspection, we all met at our office. We travelled to the Elephant Forest by vintage jeep, and we were all very excited to meet the elephants. It took about an hour to get there, and it was quite difficult to find as the entrance was somewhat hidden.

We knew we were in the right place as there was a distinctive smell that I hadn’t smelled before!

We were welcomed by the staff and offered tea or coffee. The staff then briefed us about how to behave with the elephants and not to scare or startle them. We then made food for them. This was a mixture of rice bran (or husk), banana, and salt.

Then it was time to see the elephants!

It was truly one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Walking side by side with the elephants in the forest and helping to feed them breakfast felt so special. Along the way, I even picked up some wild fruits from the forest and shared them with my team. The taste was quite strange but interesting to try — a little adventure for the taste buds!

The Big Personalities of the Kulen Elephant Forest

What made the day even more memorable was learning the elephants’ names. I still remember them: Chi Mean, Chi Tone, Chi Youl, Gom Phoy, I Plock, Savath, Chi Ole, Chi Chlorb, Itok, and Kham Song. Honestly, I think their names sound even better than mine, haha! Each elephant is so big, gentle, and of course, always hungry — they eat a lot every day!

I was deeply impressed by their strength but also touched by their gentle nature. The elephants are very careful around people, but they really don’t like dogs because of the barking. They also prefer a calm environment and don’t enjoy sudden silence or loud noises. At one point, I noticed how, when the elephants stood tall, their bodies even reminded me of human forms — it was a fascinating thought that made me smile.

For over 22 years, these elephants worked by carrying visitors around the temples of the World Heritage Site. But today, their lives have completely changed — they now live freely in their natural forest home. This change is like a sign of hope in a changing world, and it makes me very happy. They are no longer treated as vehicles for riding, and I truly admire the people who dedicate their lives to caring for them.

What touched me the most is how elephants show love in ways that are so similar to humans. They are loyal, and many of them stay with only one partner for life. After the forest walk, we also had the chance to help bathe the elephants — such a heartwarming and unforgettable experience.

Lunch at the campsite was another highlight. Surrounded by the fresh, earthy smell of the forest, we enjoyed our meal while watching the elephants nearby. Eating in such a natural setting made me feel deeply connected to the forest and its animals.

Visiting the Kulen Elephant Forest was more than just a trip — it was an experience full of learning, laughter, and love for nature. I highly recommend this place to anyone who cares about animals and wants to create memories that will last a lifetime.

The Great Transition: Our Final Farewell and a Welcome to KTI Phnom Penh Airport

On August 31 2025, we departed from Phnom Penh International Airport on a flight to New Delhi. This flight would be our last from that historic airport! We feel incredibly lucky to have been a part of its final moments of operation. What an amazing way to say goodbye to a piece of history!

The airport was built in the 1950s and operated under the Pochentong name for decades before being officially renamed Phnom Penh International Airport in the late 1990s. The name “Pochentong” refers to the area where the airport is located, a district just west of Phnom Penh’s city center.

The Pochentong Airport played a crucial and central role during the period of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), which was active from 1992 to 1993.

During the UNTAC mission, Pochentong Airport served as the primary logistical and operational hub for the entire UN peacekeeping and humanitarian effort. It was the main point of entry and exit for a massive influx of international personnel, including military peacekeepers, civilian police, and aid workers from dozens of countries.

Repatriation of Refugees

One of the most significant functions of the airport during this time was its role in the repatriation of Cambodian refugees. From 1992 to 1993, UNTAC oversaw the return of over 360,000 Cambodian refugees from camps in Thailand. While most of the repatriation was conducted by road, the airport was essential for coordinating the movement of personnel and aid related to this massive humanitarian effort. It served as a gateway for the return of Cambodians who had been displaced by years of war and conflict.

In essence, Pochentong Airport was the lifeline of the UNTAC mission, symbolizing both the international community’s effort to restore peace in Cambodia and the hope for a new beginning as Cambodians returned to their homeland.

The airport was closed to commercial flights on September 9, 2025, and all services have been transferred to the new Techo International Airport (KTI).

The first commercial airline to land at the new Techo International Airport (KTI) on its opening day, September 9, 2025, was Air Cambodia.

Their inaugural flight, K6611, arrived from Guangzhou, China, and was greeted with a ceremonial water cannon salute and a traditional Cambodian welcome.² Shortly after, a Singapore Airlines flight also landed, marking the new airport’s first international arrival.³

Phnom Penh’s new airport, officially known as Techo International Airport (KTI), is now operational.¹ It officially opened on September 9, 2025, and has taken over all commercial flights from the former Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH).

On September 22, 2025, we had to fly from New Delhi and land at Phnom Penh’s brand-new Techo International Airport (KTI)!

From the plane, we were treated to a spectacular view of the city’s skyline. Since we were flying at a low altitude, we had a perfect vantage point to see the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers merging in a beautiful embrace. The landing was as smooth as silk, and the moment we stepped into the terminal, we were absolutely blown away! The entire building is breathtakingly impressive and absolutely spotless.

The staff was fantastic—everyone from security to the cleaning crew was so welcoming and had a huge smile for us. They were incredibly helpful, especially for those who hadn’t completed their e-arrival cards beforehand. There were a dozen tablets ready for use, and a friendly staff member was right there to help. Since we already had our visa and e-arrival cards, we sailed through immigration in record time!

We even took a moment to visit the departure hall, where a massive and beautiful Buddha statue stands. It’s truly a sight to behold. It being a Sunday and the airport being less than two weeks old, there were so many locals who had come just to admire the new building, and we completely understood why. This stunning new airport is a monumental asset for Cambodia!

Here is what you need to know about KTI Phnom Penh International Airport:

The airport is located in the Kandal and Takeo provinces, about 20-30 kilometers south of Phnom Penh’s city center. It covers a massive area of 2,600 hectares, making it one of the largest airports in the world by land size.

In its first phase, the airport is designed to handle up to 13 million passengers per year.This is a significant upgrade from the old airport, which served around 6 million passengers in 2019.

The airport has a master plan for phased expansion, with a goal to eventually handle up to 50 million passengers annually by 2050.

Designed by the renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners, the terminal’s design is inspired by Cambodian cultural heritage, featuring a tree-canopy-like roof that allows for ample natural light. It is also designed to be highly sustainable, with an on-site solar farm.

As our trip neared its end, the call of the coast was impossible to ignore. Koh Rong promised a tropical escape, a chance to simply unwind and let the experiences of our adventure settle in. It truly delivered. With its crystalline turquoise waters and lush, green interior, the island feels like a hidden gem, a world away from the rest of Cambodia.

The Ultimate Travel Hack

With our return flight set to depart from Siem Reap, we faced the common traveler’s dilemma: a long, exhausting bus ride across the country or a more efficient, but potentially less scenic, alternative. We opted for a little travel hack that we now recommend to everyone: a quick, one-hour flight from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap.

The decision was a game-changer. Instead of spending an entire day on the road, we gained precious hours on the island. Leaving Koh Rong a day earlier than we had originally planned allowed us to catch an early morning ferry, which connected with our flight. The journey itself was a highlight. We flew on a small ATR72-500 turboprop plane from Air Cambodia, which offered a unique perspective. The low altitude gave us a breathtaking aerial tour of Cambodia’s landscape, from the sprawling coastline and deep green forests to the checkerboard patterns of rice paddies stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a final, stunning glimpse of the country, a beautiful, unexpected bonus to our trip.

A Masterclass in Customer Service

Our flight story took an unforgettable turn upon landing. We had departed Sihanoukville under brilliant sunshine, but as we touched down in Siem Reap, the sky opened up. A sudden, heavy tropical rainstorm began, and as we taxied to a stop, we realized the small ATR72-500 couldn’t connect to a jet bridge. We would have to deplane onto a completely soaked tarmac.

As the plane door opened, a collective sigh went through the cabin as the first passengers peered out at the downpour. But the ground crew had a brilliant solution that was nothing short of a masterclass in customer service. They were waiting for us,with a human chain of airline employees, each holding a large umbrella. They had lined up from the base of the plane’s stairs all the way to the bus and later to the terminal, creating a covered walkway for us.

One by one, they escorted us from the plane through the rain, ensuring not a single person got wet. In a world where customer service often feels like an afterthought, this small act of kindness was truly remarkable. It wasn’t a grand gesture, just a simple, thoughtful action that made a huge difference.

The True Spirit of Cambodia

This experience perfectly encapsulated the spirit of Cambodia. It’s a country of incredible history, natural beauty, and, most importantly, wonderful people. From the peaceful tranquility of Koh Rong to the bustling streets of Siem Reap, and even in the most unexpected situations like a rainy airport tarmac, we were met with warmth and genuine care.

Our Cambodian adventure was an incredible tapestry of ancient temples and modern-day paradise, all woven together by the kindness and resilience of its people. We arrived seeking exploration and left with our hearts full, a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most memorable part of a journey isn’t the destination itself, but the people who help you get there.

Since 2011, we’ve led travelers to Cambodia’s hidden gems, and were the first to offer the freedom of self-drive vintage jeep tours. The reception of Simon and Honey was a preview of the adventure that awaited them. Instead of a vintage jeep, a robust Landcruiser 100 awaited them, ready to bring them to our home. The ‘wow’ factor was undeniable when they saw our fleet of 18 vintage jeeps, mainly Ford MUTT 151 A1/A2s and some Mitsubishi Jeep CJ3s. Their eyes spoke volumes; this was an adventure that exceeded their wildest expectations. Over the coming days, we led them to places deeply hidden, where tourist crowds dare not venture. With our profound knowledge of Cambodia’s roads, and beyond, we unlocked a dimension of travel unattainable with a standard tour bus. Temples whispering ancient secrets, villages where time seems to stand still – this was Cambodia in its rawest, most authentic form.

We are thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations to H.E. Huot Hak on his appointment as the new Minister of Tourism for Cambodia. On 21st of September, CAMDMC, 18 leading DMC from Cambodia, had the privilege of attending the first meeting between the Minister and the private sector. Cambodian Travel Partner is a member of CAMDMC.

This open dialogue provided a platform for industry stakeholders to directly address the challenges and opportunities facing Cambodia’s tourism industry. From rising costs and reduced flight connectivity to increasing competition from neighboring countries. His appointment marks a significant turning point for our sector, as we have long sought a more collaborative relationship with the Ministry of Tourism (MoT).

A Collaborative Approach

Minister Hak demonstrated a keen understanding of the complexities facing our industry and expressed a genuine commitment to working collaboratively with the private sector. The past few decades have seen a disconnect between the MoT and the private sector. However, with Minister Huot Hak at the helm, we are optimistic about a renewed partnership. Together, we can work towards achieving our shared goals and revitalizing Cambodia’s tourism industry.

We recognize that the road ahead is not without its challenges. Rising costs, reduced flight connectivity, and increased competition from neighboring countries have created a complex environment for tourism businesses.
