Welcome to KTI Phnom Penh Airport

The Great Transition: Our Final Farewell and a Welcome to KTI Phnom Penh Airport

On August 31 2025, we departed from Phnom Penh International Airport on a flight to New Delhi. This flight would be our last from that historic airport! We feel incredibly lucky to have been a part of its final moments of operation. What an amazing way to say goodbye to a piece of history!

But looking ahead, we are incredibly excited about the future of travel in Cambodia, led by the stunning new Phnom Penh airport:  Techo International Airport (KTI) in Phnom Penh!

Old airport Phnom Penh
Phnom Penh Pochentong airport

The airport was built in the 1950s and operated under the Pochentong name for decades before being officially renamed Phnom Penh International Airport in the late 1990s. The name “Pochentong” refers to the area where the airport is located, a district just west of Phnom Penh’s city center.

The Pochentong Airport played a crucial and central role during the period of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC), which was active from 1992 to 1993.

During the UNTAC mission, Pochentong Airport served as the primary logistical and operational hub for the entire UN peacekeeping and humanitarian effort. It was the main point of entry and exit for a massive influx of international personnel, including military peacekeepers, civilian police, and aid workers from dozens of countries.

Repatriation of Refugees

One of the most significant functions of the airport during this time was its role in the repatriation of Cambodian refugees. From 1992 to 1993, UNTAC oversaw the return of over 360,000 Cambodian refugees from camps in Thailand. While most of the repatriation was conducted by road, the airport was essential for coordinating the movement of personnel and aid related to this massive humanitarian effort. It served as a gateway for the return of Cambodians who had been displaced by years of war and conflict.

In essence, Pochentong Airport was the lifeline of the UNTAC mission, symbolizing both the international community’s effort to restore peace in Cambodia and the hope for a new beginning as Cambodians returned to their homeland.

The airport was closed to commercial flights on September 9, 2025, and all services have been transferred to the new Techo International Airport (KTI).

The new KTI Phnom Penh Techo International Airport

The first commercial airline to land at the new Techo International Airport (KTI) on its opening day, September 9, 2025, was Air Cambodia.

Their inaugural flight, K6611, arrived from Guangzhou, China, and was greeted with a ceremonial water cannon salute and a traditional Cambodian welcome.2 Shortly after, a Singapore Airlines flight also landed, marking the new airport’s first international arrival.3

Phnom Penh’s new airport, officially known as Techo International Airport (KTI), is now operational.1 It officially opened on September 9, 2025, and has taken over all commercial flights from the former Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH).

On September 22, 2025, we had to fly from New Delhi and land at Phnom Penh’s brand-new Techo International Airport (KTI)!

From the plane, we were treated to a spectacular view of the city’s skyline. Since we were flying at a low altitude, we had a perfect vantage point to see the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers merging in a beautiful embrace. The landing was as smooth as silk, and the moment we stepped into the terminal, we were absolutely blown away! The entire building is breathtakingly impressive and absolutely spotless.

The staff was fantastic—everyone from security to the cleaning crew was so welcoming and had a huge smile for us. They were incredibly helpful, especially for those who hadn’t completed their e-arrival cards beforehand. There were a dozen tablets ready for use, and a friendly staff member was right there to help. Since we already had our visa and e-arrival cards, we sailed through immigration in record time!

We even took a moment to visit the departure hall, where a massive and beautiful Buddha statue stands. It’s truly a sight to behold. It being a Sunday and the airport being less than two weeks old, there were so many locals who had come just to admire the new building, and we completely understood why. This stunning new airport is a monumental asset for Cambodia!

Here is what you need to know about KTI Phnom Penh International Airport:

The airport is located in the Kandal and Takeo provinces, about 20-30 kilometers south of Phnom Penh’s city center. It covers a massive area of 2,600 hectares, making it one of the largest airports in the world by land size.

KTI Techo International airport

In its first phase, the airport is designed to handle up to 13 million passengers per year. This is a significant upgrade from the old airport, which served around 6 million passengers in 2019.

The airport has a master plan for phased expansion, with a goal to eventually handle up to 50 million passengers annually by 2050.

Designed by the renowned architectural firm Foster + Partners, the terminal’s design is inspired by Cambodian cultural heritage, featuring a tree-canopy-like roof that allows for ample natural light. It is also designed to be highly sustainable, with an on-site solar farm.

A Walking Tour in Historical Chhloung

A Journey Back in Time: A Walking Tour in Historical Chhloung

Imagine a place where the gentle rhythm of the Mekong River dictates the pace of life, a hidden gem where time seems to stand still. Welcome to Chhloung, a quiet, rural town that offers a rare and authentic glimpse into Cambodia’s past. While many places have modernized, Chhloung has miraculously preserved its serene, landlocked charm, particularly its stunning collection of French colonial buildings. This isn’t just a place to visit; it’s a place to experience, to breathe in history, and to connect with a way of life that has largely vanished.

Discover a Hidden Architectural Gem

The architecture here is simply breathtaking. Unlike the scattered ruins or renovated facades found elsewhere, Chhloung features a remarkably well-preserved collection of French colonial-era buildings that transport you back a century. The star of the show is, without a doubt, Le Relais de Chhlong, a magnificent former mansion that has been lovingly restored and transformed into a charming boutique hotel. Built in 1916, this iconic structure is a prime example of the elegant colonial style that once defined the region. Its grandeur and beauty serve as a perfect starting point for our journey.

But the history doesn’t stop there. As you stroll down the main street, you’ll discover more of these old French colonial buildings. While they may no longer be in pristine condition, their faded paint and weathered exteriors tell their own unique stories. These are not museum pieces; they are living relics of a bygone era, each with a history etched into its walls. Walking down this street, you can truly feel and experience what life was like here a hundred years ago, a sensation that is as rare as it is magical.

Meet Your Guide, Ms. Pisey

What truly brings this historical tour to life is your guide, Ms. Pisey. Born and raised in Chhloung, she is not just a tour guide; she is a local storyteller and a keeper of the town’s history. After finishing school, she moved to Phnom Penh and later to Siem Reap, working in the very tourism industry she now shares with you. Her journey has given her a unique perspective, blending deep local knowledge with a professional’s understanding of what makes a travel experience truly exceptional. Ms. Pisey’s decision to return to her hometown to help her aging mother is a testament to her beautiful connection to her roots, and today she runs her own small clothing shop on the very same street lined with the colonial buildings.

Her personal story is interwoven with the narrative of the town. She’s not just reciting facts; she’s sharing her childhood memories and insights, offering a personal and intimate look into a place she holds so dear. Her passion for her hometown is contagious, and you’ll feel like you’re exploring the streets with a long-lost friend.

A Stroll Through History and Local Life

Our immersive walking tour begins at the elegant Le Relais de Chhlong. From there, Ms. Pisey will lead you on a captivating one-hour journey. As you walk down the historic street, she’ll bring the past to life with stories of the people who lived here and the events that shaped the town. You’ll feel a profound sense of stepping back in time as you take in the architectural details and the gentle rhythm of daily life.

Local market in Chhloung

The tour continues with a vibrant detour to the heart of the community: the local market. This is where the real adventure begins. Ms. Pisey will guide you through the bustling stalls, sharing her knowledge of the local produce and giving you a chance to sample exotic fruits you’ve likely never tasted before. The colors, the sounds, and the smells of the market are an intoxicating feast for the senses, and you’ll feel a genuine connection to the local people and their daily routines.

In short, Ms. Pisey provides a one-of-a-kind insight into this hidden gem on the Mekong. This historical walking tour is perfectly suited for those who want to get off the beaten path and discover the authentic Cambodia. It’s a rich and rewarding experience that seamlessly blends the best of architecture, history, and a true glimpse into local life.

Koh Rong beach

The Ultimate Cambodia Travel Hack

The ultimate travel hack in Cambodia

From Paradise back to Siem Reap

After an exhilarating journey through the ancient wonders and vibrant cities of Cambodia, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of sand between your toes and a gentle ocean breeze. For us, that moment of pure bliss came on the pristine, white-sand beaches of Koh Rong. This island paradise is the perfect place to decompress, trading the awe-inspiring chaos of the mainland for the serene rhythms of island life.

Paradise island Cambodia
Koh Rong
Paradise island
Koh Rong

We had just spent weeks exploring the intricate carvings of Angkor Wat, navigating the bustling markets of Phnom Penh, and soaking in the rich history of a country that has endured so much. As our trip neared its end, the call of the coast was impossible to ignore. Koh Rong promised a tropical escape, a chance to simply unwind and let the experiences of our adventure settle in. It truly delivered. With its crystalline turquoise waters and lush, green interior, the island feels like a hidden gem, a world away from the rest of Cambodia.

The Ultimate Travel Hack

With our return flight set to depart from Siem Reap, we faced the common traveler’s dilemma: a long, exhausting bus ride across the country or a more efficient, but potentially less scenic, alternative. We opted for a little travel hack that we now recommend to everyone: a quick, one-hour flight from Sihanoukville to Siem Reap.

The decision was a game-changer. Instead of spending an entire day on the road, we gained precious hours on the island. Leaving Koh Rong a day earlier than we had originally planned allowed us to catch an early morning ferry, which connected with our flight. The journey itself was a highlight. We flew on a small ATR72-500 turboprop plane from Air Cambodia, which offered a unique perspective. The low altitude gave us a breathtaking aerial tour of Cambodia’s landscape, from the sprawling coastline and deep green forests to the checkerboard patterns of rice paddies stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a final, stunning glimpse of the country, a beautiful, unexpected bonus to our trip.

A Masterclass in Customer Service

Our flight story took an unforgettable turn upon landing. We had departed Sihanoukville under brilliant sunshine, but as we touched down in Siem Reap, the sky opened up. A sudden, heavy tropical rainstorm began, and as we taxied to a stop, we realized the small ATR72-500 couldn’t connect to a jet bridge. We would have to deplane onto a completely soaked tarmac.

As the plane door opened, a collective sigh went through the cabin as the first passengers peered out at the downpour. But the ground crew had a brilliant solution that was nothing short of a masterclass in customer service. They were waiting for us,with a human chain of airline employees, each holding a large umbrella. They had lined up from the base of the plane’s stairs all the way to the bus and later to the terminal, creating a covered walkway for us.

One by one, they escorted us from the plane through the rain, ensuring not a single person got wet. In a world where customer service often feels like an afterthought, this small act of kindness was truly remarkable. It wasn’t a grand gesture, just a simple, thoughtful action that made a huge difference.

The True Spirit of Cambodia

This experience perfectly encapsulated the spirit of Cambodia. It’s a country of incredible history, natural beauty, and, most importantly, wonderful people. From the peaceful tranquility of Koh Rong to the bustling streets of Siem Reap, and even in the most unexpected situations like a rainy airport tarmac, we were met with warmth and genuine care.

Our Cambodian adventure was an incredible tapestry of ancient temples and modern-day paradise, all woven together by the kindness and resilience of its people. We arrived seeking exploration and left with our hearts full, a powerful reminder that sometimes, the most memorable part of a journey isn’t the destination itself, but the people who help you get there.

4WD TV Meets Cambodjajeep

The adventure ignited when 4WD TV from Australia set their sights on Cambodia, seeking the ultimate off-road experience. They found their guide in Cambodiajeep.com, the pioneers of vintage jeep tours in this mystical land. Since 2011, we’ve led travelers to Cambodia’s hidden gems, and were the first to offer the freedom of self-drive vintage jeep tours. These aren’t ordinary trips; they are epic expeditions that reveal the true Cambodia, off the beaten path.

The reception of Simon and Honey was a preview of the adventure that awaited them. Instead of a vintage jeep, a robust Landcruiser 100 awaited them, ready to bring them to our home. The ‘wow’ factor was undeniable when they saw our fleet of 18 vintage jeeps, mainly Ford MUTT 151 A1/A2s and some Mitsubishi Jeep CJ3s. Their eyes spoke volumes; this was an adventure that exceeded their wildest expectations. Over the coming days, we led them to places deeply hidden, where tourist crowds dare not venture. With our profound knowledge of Cambodia’s roads, and beyond, we unlocked a dimension of travel unattainable with a standard tour bus. Temples whispering ancient secrets, villages where time seems to stand still – this was Cambodia in its rawest, most authentic form.

In addition to our day tours to iconic locations like Angkor Wat and Phnom Kulen, we excel in multi-day self-drive expeditions. Each journey is tailor-made, from 2 to 15 days or longer, with a support vehicle, mechanic, and English-speaking guide to ensure a safe and enriching experience. We are thrilled to extend our heartfelt congratulations to H.E. Huot Hak on his appointment as the new Minister of Tourism for Cambodia. On 21st of September, CAMDMC, 18 leading DMC from Cambodia, had the privilege of attending the first meeting between the Minister and the private sector. A Collaborative Approach

Minister Hak demonstrated a keen understanding of the complexities facing our industry and expressed a genuine commitment to working collaboratively with the private sector. Nevertheless, we are committed to overcoming these obstacles and positioning Cambodia as a premier destination for international travelers.

We believe that by working together, the government and the private sector can overcome these challenges and position Cambodia as a leading tourist destination.

 A Bright Future

Overtourism? Not in Cambodia

Stay away from the crowd and visit less known places

Venice to Introduce Entrance Fee: A Solution or a Cash Grab?

Venice, the iconic Italian city of canals and gondolas, has been grappling with the issue of overtourism for years. The influx of millions of visitors annually has put a strain on the city’s infrastructure, environment, and the quality of life for its residents. In an attempt to curb the crowds, Venetian authorities have announced plans to introduce an entrance fee for tourists starting in 2024.

While the move aims to reduce the number of visitors and generate additional revenue for the city, it has been met with mixed reactions. Some argue that it will simply push tourists to other destinations, while others believe it’s a necessary step to preserve the city’s fragile ecosystem and cultural heritage.

But is overtourism just a Venice problem?

Overtourism is a global phenomenon, affecting popular destinations worldwide. From the beaches of Thailand to the ancient ruins of Rome, the sheer volume of tourists is causing significant environmental and social impacts.

Mass tourism vs. mindful travel

As travelers, we often find ourselves caught in the herd mentality, flocking to the same popular hotspots, jostling for photos at overcrowded landmarks, and leaving behind a trail of waste and environmental damage. But what if there’s another way to travel?

Bus from Phnom Penh to Hoh Chi Minh

It is September 18, 2022. The borders between Cambodia and Vietnam have been open for a while. We wanted to experience what it is like now to travel by bus from Phnom Penh to Hoh Chi Minh. We bought the tickets through Camboticket. The price for this bus was $35, per person. Goes very quickly and easily and you can reserve your seat. Lily doesn’t need a visa for Vietnam but Andre had to order a visa online. You can do this on the official government website https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn . Within a few days, you can download the visa. Make sure you arrange it on time as it can take longer during holidays or festival days. Price is $20 plus credit card fees. Print out your visa as you will need it later.

Our choice was Kumho Samco bus. This bus has very comfortable seats and plenty of legroom. In their office at check-in, they ask for your passport and Vietnamese visa. This is the reason you need to carry a printed copy with you. The team at Kumho Samco bus take care of all the arrangements at the border. This saves a lot of hassle at the border. At 09.30am we left Phnom Penh. The first 30 km it is quite busy getting out of the city. After that, traffic calms down. Kumho Samco have experienced bus drivers and drive very well. No reckless behaviour. Near the border in the village of Bavet, you see casino after casino passing by. A few kilometres before the border, the bus stops at a restaurant. Here you get the opportunity to have lunch. In the meantime, the bus company staff is already heading to the border to take care of the formalities.

After lunch, it is only a few minutes’ drive before you reach the border. Everyone is expected to get off and after walking a few hundred metres you are allowed back on the bus and drive through no man’s land. At the Vietnamese side of the border, you have to get off again and this time go through the security check with all your travel luggage. You no longer have to wear face masks, nor do you have to show a vaccination card. At the counter, your name is read out and you get your passport back. Very efficient. Then back on the bus and off to Hoh Chi Minh. The whole procedure took less than 45 minutes.

Another couple of hours’ drive to Hoh Chi Minh. As we got closer to Hoh Chi Minh the busier it got in traffic. It also started to rain. Despite this, you could still see many scooters passing by. We reached the Kumho Samco bus station around 5pm. All in all, a smooth and relaxing journey by bus from Phnom Penh to Hoh Chi Minh.

Tip: if you haven’t arranged transport in Hoh Chi MInh beforehand, the Kumho Samco office can arrange transport for you, but their knowledge of the English language is very limited. You can download Uber or Grab on your phone beforehand and then it’s easy to arrange transport in Hoh Chi Minh.
